Jaisalmer, famously known as the “Golden City”, is a former medieval trading centre and princely state located in the heart of the Thar Desert. The city gets its golden glow from the extensive use of yellow sandstone in its architecture. Rawal Jaisal Singh of the Bhati Rajput clan founded Jaisalmer in 1156 AD and made the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort his capital.
Today, Jaisalmer is one of Rajasthan’s most iconic destinations – famous for its living fort, intricate havelis, ancient Jain temples, serene lakes and nearby sand dunes where travellers enjoy camel safaris, jeep safaris and desert camp stays under the stars.
Tourist AttractionsJaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal. It once stood on the crossroads of important trade routes. The massive yellow sandstone walls appear golden in the sunlight, blending beautifully with the surrounding desert – hence the name “Sonar Quila” (Golden Fort). The fort is unique because it is still a “living fort” where people reside, with houses, temples, shops and guest houses inside. The fort also has an ingenious old drainage system and offers panoramic views of the Golden City.
Within the fort complex lie a group of beautifully carved Jain Temples, dating back to the 12th–15th centuries. Every inch of these temples is decorated with intricate carvings, frescoes and detailed sculptures. The temple architecture is often compared to the famous Dilwara Temples of Mount Abu. On the walls, you can see finely carved human and animal figures, making these temples a must-visit for art and architecture lovers.
Patwon ki Haveli is one of the most impressive and important havelis in Jaisalmer. It is actually a cluster of five small havelis, built by a wealthy trader for his sons. Due to its stunning façade, ornate balconies, jharokhas and detailed stonework, it is also known as the “Mansion of the Brocade Merchants”. The haveli showcases a beautiful blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture and gives a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of rich traders of that era.
Gadisar Lake (also spelt Gadsisar) was originally constructed by Maharawal Gadsi Singh. It is a peaceful man-made lake surrounded by shrines, ghats and small temples. The most popular among these is the Krishna Temple. Beautifully carved chhatris (domed pavilions) and gateways add to the charm of the lake. During the tourist season, visitors can enjoy boating and bird watching, as many migratory birds visit the lake. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy sunrise or sunset views in Jaisalmer.
